Tadanori Yokoo ( 横尾 忠則 ) is the king of japanese graphic design and illustration. Famous since the 60s, his reign is undisputed and his influence global. His tentacular body of work takes root in japanese ukiyo-e and european Art history, from Andy Warhol to Russian Constructivism, Magritte to Hokusai.
In Japan, he has gained the influence and following of a rock star. His work is made of radical and unique choices. For example, in 1981, he unexpectedly stopped taking any commercial work to focus on painting after seeing a Picasso retrospective at the MOMA in New York. He possesses that mix of passion and absolute rigor that makes an artist unstoppable.




"Tadanori Yokoo's works reveal all of the unbearable things which we Japanese have inside ourselves and they make people angry and frightened. He makes explosions with the frightening resemblance which lies between the vulgarity of billboards advertising variety shows during festivals at the shrine devoted to the war dead and the red containers of Coca Cola in American Pop Art, things which are in us but which we do not want to see."
